Who is Sanjay Nirupam?

Sanjay Nirupam is an Indian politician who was formerly associated with the Shiv Sena and later joined the Indian National Congress. He served two terms as a Rajya Sabha MP, first with the Shiv Sena and then with the Congress. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Mumbai North in 2009 on a Congress ticket but lost in 2014. Sanjay Nirupam served as the President of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee from 2015 to 2019.

Sanjay Nirupam was born on February 6, 1965 in Rohtas, Bihar. He completed his graduation with a B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science from Anugrah Narayan College in Patna. He developed an interest in politics during his college days in 1984 before starting his career as a journalist.

Career

Sanjay Nirupam started his career as a journalist in New Delhi in 1986, later moving to Mumbai to join Jan Satta newspaper in 1988. In 1993, he joined Shiv Sena’s Dopahar Ka Saamna as executive editor on Bal Thackeray’s invitation. He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1996 and 2000 from Shiv Sena. After resigning in 2005, he joined Congress and was elected to Lok Sabha from Mumbai North in 2009. He served as AICC secretary and Mumbai Congress chief from 2015-2019 before being replaced amid opposition. His recent suspension from Congress in 2024 led to his resignation.
