After completing his studies, he got the offer to shift to Madurai for further studies, which he rejected in the hope of getting an opportunity to act in films in Chennai. To become self-sufficient, S. J. Suryah worked at hotels and made ends meet. Soon, he got an offer to work as an assistant director. And he grabbed it and worked as an assistant director for the film Aasai.
Later on, on the shoot of the film, Ullaasam Ajith Kumar recognised S. J. Suryah and gave him a chance. He listened to his story and gathered a team. The film was made and released in 1999, it was named Vaali. The film was a turning point in S. J. Suryah’s career. The film gained him huge recognition and fame in the industry. Later, he was approached by A. M. Rathnam to work on the film Kushi with him. The film was made and released in 2001. Again, S. J. Suryah achieved great success and recognition with the film.
