Sandeep Lamichhane is a Nepalese Cricketer. He was former captain of Nepal Cricket Team. A right-arm leg spin bowler, Lamichhane has played for Twenty20 franchise sides around the world, including the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL),the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL),and the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).He is Nepal’s highest wicket taker in ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

Early life

Lamichhane was born on 2 August 2000 in Aruchaur, Syangja, Gandaki Province. During his childhood, he considered Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar and Australian bowler Shane Warne as his cricketing idols.


Lamichhane made his List A cricket debut in the 2015–17 ICC World Cricket League Championship against Namibia. He was named in Nepal’s under-19 squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup and took a hat-trick in their match against Ireland. Lamichhane finished the tournament as second highest wicket taker with 14 wickets at an average of 17.07 and a strike rate of 21.9. He was recruited by Scott McKechnie to play for the Kowloon Cantons franchise in the Hong Kong T20 Blitz. Lamichhane was invited to play at the Western Suburbs District Cricket Club in Sydney. In 2018, Nepalese cricketer Lamichhane was included in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction list and became the first Nepalese cricketer to get a contract. He was drafted to play for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League and made his senior Twenty20 debut for the Delhi Capitals. In June 2018, Lamichane was selected to play for the Montreal Tigers in the Global T20 Canada tournament and was named in Nangarhar’s squad in the Afghanistan Premier League. In October 2018, he was signed by the Melbourne Stars for the Big Bash League and later in November 2018 was named in Lahore Qalandars’s squad in the Pakistan Super League. In 2019, he was named one of eight players to watch by the International Cricket Council. Lamichhane played for various teams, including the Toronto Nationals, Jamaica Tallawahs, Hobart Hurricanes, Worcestershire, and Dambulla Giants. He made history as the first bowler to take 100 wickets in ODI history. He was awarded a central contract, named ICC Player of the Month, and became the fastest bowler to complete 100 wickets. On 8 September 2022, Lamichhane was removed as captain after he was accused of rape by a minor. Later, the Supreme Court of Nepal allowed him to continue to play as part of the Nepali national cricket team as per the request of CAN, citing “no person is guilty unless proven”. In December 2023, the Kathmandu District Court convicted him of rape, although the court decided that the victim was not a minor at the time of the incident. In January 2024, he was sentenced to eight years in prison. On 15 May 2024 he was found not guilty by Supreme Court, Patan and ban on him for playing domestic as well as international crickets was removed by CAN too.
