Rajinder Singh Bedi was born in British India. He had to leave college early because his mother got tuberculosis, so he started working as a clerk. Later, he became a writer and joined All India Radio.

As a renowned novelist, playwright, and screenwriter, his works included award-winning novels like “Ek Chadar Maili Si” and iconic film dialogues in classics such as “Madhumati” and “Devdas.” Rajinder Singh also ventured into film direction and production.


Rajinder Singh Bedi studied until fourth grade in Lahore Cantonment, Punjab, and later passed his matriculation examination with first division in 1931.

Rajinder Singh Bedi was married to Satwant Kaur, with whom he had three sons, Prem, Narendra (a film director), Rajkumar (a scriptwriter), and two daughters, Surinder and Parminder.
