Who is Rahul Gandhi?

Rahul Gandhi is an Indian politician and former president of the Indian National Congress party. He is the son of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and belongs to the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty. Early life

Rahul Gandhi was born in 1970 in New Delhi to Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi. After his grandmother Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984, he was mostly homeschooled for security reasons. He later studied at elite institutions like St. Stephen’s College, Harvard University, and Trinity College, Cambridge, before joining politics in 2004.


Rahul Gandhi entered politics in 2004 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amethi. He held various positions in the Congress party, becoming its vice president in 2013 and president in 2017. As Congress president, he led the party’s campaign in the 2019 elections which resulted in a massive defeat. He resigned as president after the loss. Despite losing Amethi in 2019, he won from Wayanad but was later disqualified as an MP in 2023 over a defamation conviction, though this was stayed by the Supreme Court.


Rahul Gandhi attended St. Columba’s School and The Doon School in India. After his father’s assassination in 1991, he shifted from Harvard University to Rollins College in the US, where he completed a BA in International Relations. He later obtained an M.Phil in Development Economics from Trinity College, Cambridge.

Rahul Gandhi belongs to the prominent Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty. His father was former PM Rajiv Gandhi and mother is Sonia Gandhi. His sister is Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
