He is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and has served as the longest-serving secretary of the Kerala State Committee of the CPI(M). Early life
Vijayan was born on 24 May 1945 in Pinarayi, Kannur, Kerala, as the youngest son of Koran and Kalyani. He had 14 siblings of whom only three survived.
Career
Pinarayi Vijayan, a student union activist, joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1964. He became the Kannur district secretary of the Kerala Students Federation (KSF), later the Students Federation of India (SFI), and later the state secretary and president of KSF. He later became the president of the Kerala State Youth Federation (KSYF), later the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). Vijayan was imprisoned for 1.5 years during communist activities in Kerala. He later became the Kannur district secretary of the CPI(M) after M.V. Raghavan left the party. He was elected to the Kerala Assembly at 25, becoming Kerala’s youngest legislator. During the emergency rule in Kerala, many CPI(M) members and leaders, including Pinarayi Vijayan, were imprisoned for 1.5 years. After his release, Vijayan made an impassionate speech against Congress leader K. Karunakaran, embarrassing the then C. Achutha Menon government. He was appointed as Minister of Electricity in 1996, leading to significant progress in electricity generation and distribution. In 1998, he became the state secretary of the CPI(M) and was elected to the Politburo in 2002. Under his leadership, the party strengthened in the state, winning elections in 2004, 2006, 2014, and 2016. In 2007, the CPI(M) suspended Vijayan and V. S. Achuthanandan from the Politburo for public remarks, but reinstated him later. He has become the Chief Minister of Kerala two times.
Education
After graduating from school, he worked as a handloom weaver for a year before joining for a pre-university course in the Government Brennen College, Thalassery. Subsequently, he earned B.A. Economics degree from the same college.
