Early life
All the members in the Pathirana family was very much fond of music, so all of them were attached to music. Pathirana however discovered his interest in Cricket and started pursuing it.
Career
He started playing cricket professionally in the year 2021, And then he was selected for Sri Lanka international squad in the year 2022. Blessed with natural talent and a fierce determination to succeed, he honed his skills through rigorous training and hard work. His breakthrough came when he represented Sri Lanka in the Under-19 cricket team, where he showcased his immense potential and caught the attention of cricketing pundits. In 2019, during a match against India in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Pathirana delivered a sensational spell of fast bowling, capturing the cricketing world’s imagination. His spell of 6 wickets for just 7 runs became the best bowling figures in the history of the Under-19 World Cup, a remarkable achievement for a young cricketer. This exceptional performance earned him widespread recognition and established him as one of the most promising talents in international cricket. After some excellent performances in the domestic circuit, He was selected in the Sri Lankan T20I Squad for their series against Afghanistan in August 2022. And he made his debut T20I on August 27, 2022 in the match of Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan at Dubai (DSC).In March 2023, he was named in both One Day International (ODI) and T20I squad for the series against New Zealand. He made his ODI debut on 2 June 2023, against Afghanistan. He dismissed Rahmat Shah to claim his maiden ODI wicket. In June 2023 Sri Lanka Cricket announced their 15-member squad for the ICC ODI World Cup qualifier. The national team opted to selected Matheesha Pathirana in their line-up During the first T20I against Afghanistan, Pathirana delivered match winning bowling spell where he took 4/24 which included 2 wickets in the penultimate over. Sri Lanka finally won the match by 4 runs and he adjudged player of match for his performances. In April 2022, he was signed by the Chennai Super Kings, as a replacement for Adam Milne for the 2022 Indian Premier League. He made his debut against the Gujarat Titans. In the very first ball, he took the wicket of Shubman Gill, becoming the first Sri Lankan and ninth overall to achieve the feat in IPL. He became the youngest Overseas Player to win an IPL tournament after CSK won the 2023 IPL. In IPL 2024 against Mumbai Indians he took 4 wickets and helped his team in winning the match.
