Born in Durban in 1990 to a family of Indian origin, Keshav Maharaj took to cricket from a very young age under the guidance of his father, a former wicketkeeper-batsman. He progressed through age-group and domestic cricket in South Africa before making his international debut in 2016.

Keshav Maharaj made his Test debut for South Africa against Australia in 2016, becoming the first specialist spinner to debut at the WACA.
