Who is Ishant Sharma?

Ishant Sharma is an Indian cricketer who has represented India in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. He is a 6 ft 4 in tall right-arm fast-medium bowler who was called to join the Indian squad at 18. Sharma is known as Lambu due to his height and lean physique. He is considered one of the fastest Indian bowlers, bowling in excess of 150 km/h. In February 2021, during the series against England, Ishant took his 300th wicket in Test cricket. He is regarded as one of the greatest pacers in Indian Cricket.

Early life

Ishant Sharma was born on 2 September 1988 to Vijay Sharma and Grisha Sharma. Right from his childhood, he was very fascinated towards cricket.


Ishant Sharma, a talented Indian bowler, has taken 68 wickets in 14 first-class games for Delhi. He has toured with the India Under-19s and Pakistan, and was purchased for $950,000 in the Indian Premier League player auction in 2008. In 2018, he joined Sussex CCC for the first two months of the county season.In 2007, Sharma was selected for the Bangladesh tour and played as a replacement for Munaf Patel. He bowled three overs and conceded five runs without taking a wicket. He was called back for the 3rd Test during Pakistan’s tour of India in December 2007, and picked up five wickets during the third test in Bangalore. Sharma was called to represent India again in the second test at the SCG in January 2008. He bowled reasonably in the match but was left out in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne. In the third Test match at Perth, Sharma bowled an exceptional spell to Australian captain Ricky Ponting, resulting in his wicket and helping India win. He finished the tour with figures of 6/358, an average of 59.66, and a strike rate of 101.0. In 2010, Sharma helped VVS Laxman secure a highly unlikely win over Australia by one wicket in the first Test in Mohali. In the 2011 IPL auction, Ishant Sharma was bought by the Deccan Chargers to impress selectors and push for selection in India’s ODI team. Sharma took 11 wickets in 12 matches and managed one wicket from two matches while conceding 109 runs. India won the first three ODIs, and Sharma was called into the team for the fourth, his first ODI since August 2010. After eight consecutive defeats in away Tests, India played four Tests in England, replacing India as No. 1 ranked Test team. Sharma managed 11 wickets at an average of pushing 60. In March 2012, he underwent surgery on his ankle, which meant he missed the 2012 IPL. In the 2013 Ind vs. Aus ODI series, he gave away 30 runs in an over, joining Yuvraj Singh. Sharma’s career-best figures were 7/74 in the 2014 tour of England, and he finished the 2015 three-match Test series in Sri Lanka with 13 wickets. He was handed a one-match ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following an altercation with Dhammika Prasad. Ishant Sharma, despite multiple stitches on his right hand, made history as an Indian bowler by taking his 250th Test wicket in August 2018. He also equalled Kapil Dev’s record of taking the most wickets by an Indian bowler in England, with 18 wickets. Sharma’s performance in Australia was limited due to an injury. In 2019, he hit his first half-century in Test Cricket and completed his 100th Test match against England in February 2021. Currently, he is playing for Delhi Capitals in ongoing IPL 2024.
