Early life

Weinstein was born on March 19, 1952, in the Flushing neighbourhood of Queens, New York City, to diamond cutter Max Weinstein  and his wife, Miriam. His family is Jewish, and his maternal grandparents immigrated to the United States from Poland. He grew up with his younger brother, Bob, in a housing co-op named Electchester in New York City.

The Weinstein brothers left Miramax in 2005 to form The Weinstein Company (TWC), with other executives. In 2011, filmmaker Michael Moore sued the Weinstein brothers for owed him $2.7 million in profits for Fahrenheit 9/11. Weinstein was fired from TWC in 2017, and the company filed for bankruptcy. Lantern Entertainment purchased all assets in 2018, and the company was shut down in 2018. Despite being praised for opening up the independent film market, Weinstein has been criticized for his business dealings and the re-editing of arthouse films. Weinstein was known for his aggressive discussions with directors and producers, including yelling at director Julie Taymor and her husband over a test screening of Frida. In 2008, he was accused of hassling Sydney Pollack on his deathbed about the release of The Reader. In 2009, Weinstein publicly opposed extradition efforts for Roman Polanski, who had pleaded guilty to drugging and raped a 13-year-old girl in 1977. Weinstein’s company distributed a film about the case. Weinstein was charged with 11 counts of rape, forcible oral copulation, and sexual battery between 2004 and 2013. He was found guilty of 3 of 7 charges and sentenced to 16 years in prison. His sentence in California must be served separately from his time in New York. Weinstein is appealing the Los Angeles conviction. In June 2022, he was charged with two counts of indecent assault in London. The New York Court of Appeals overturned the rape convictions in April 2024.

Harvey completed his graduation from University of Buffalo, New York.

Family and Affairs

Weinstein has been married twice. In 1987, he married his assistant Eve Chilton; the couple divorced in 2004. They share three daughters. In 2007, he married English fashion designer and actress Georgina Chapman. They have a daughter and a son. On October 10, 2017, after the sexual harassment accusations became public, Chapman announced that she was leaving Weinstein. They reached a settlement in January 2018, and their divorce was finalized in July 2021.

Harvey Weinstein has won numerous awards. On September 26, 2000, Harvey Weinstein was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (DHL) by the University at Buffalo. On April 19, 2004, Weinstein was appointed an honorary commander of the Order of the British Empire  in recognition of his contributions to the British film industry. This award was honorary because Weinstein is not a citizen of a Commonwealth country. On March 2, 2012, Weinstein was made a knight of the French Legion of Honour, in recognition of Miramax’s efforts to increase the presence and popularity of foreign films in the United States.
