Early life

Weinstein was born on March 19, 1952, in the Flushing neighbourhood of Queens, New York City, to diamond cutter Max Weinstein  and his wife, Miriam. His family is Jewish, and his maternal grandparents immigrated to the United States from Poland. He grew up with his younger brother, Bob, in a housing co-op named Electchester in New York City.

Career

The Weinstein brothers left Miramax in 2005 to form The Weinstein Company (TWC), with other executives. In 2011, filmmaker Michael Moore sued the Weinstein brothers for owed him $2.7 million in profits for Fahrenheit 9/11. Weinstein was fired from TWC in 2017, and the company filed for bankruptcy. Lantern Entertainment purchased all assets in 2018, and the company was shut down in 2018. Despite being praised for opening up the independent film market, Weinstein has been criticized for his business dealings and the re-editing of arthouse films. Weinstein was known for his aggressive discussions with directors and producers, including yelling at director Julie Taymor and her husband over a test screening of Frida. In 2008, he was accused of hassling Sydney Pollack on his deathbed about the release of The Reader. In 2009, Weinstein publicly opposed extradition efforts for Roman Polanski, who had pleaded guilty to drugging and raped a 13-year-old girl in 1977. Weinstein’s company distributed a film about the case. Weinstein was charged with 11 counts of rape, forcible oral copulation, and sexual battery between 2004 and 2013. He was found guilty of 3 of 7 charges and sentenced to 16 years in prison. His sentence in California must be served separately from his time in New York. Weinstein is appealing the Los Angeles conviction. In June 2022, he was charged with two counts of indecent assault in London. The New York Court of Appeals overturned the rape convictions in April 2024.
