Who is Daryl Mitchell ?

Is a New Zealand cricketer who plays all formats of the game for the New Zealand national team and represents Canterbury in domestic cricket. He is the son of New Zealand rugby union coach and former player John Mitchell. He made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings this year. He was bought for 14 crores in the mega auction. He is all set to play in the upcoming T20 World Cup for New Zealand.

Early life

Daryl Mitchell, a 20-year-old Australian cricketer, began his career at Northern Districts in 2012. He lived in Perth for five years and played with Australian cricketers like Andrew Tye, Marcus Harris, and Marcus Stoinis. Mitchell played for the Western Australia Under 19s, Under 23s, and Australian Centre of Excellence. He received a contract from Northern Districts and became a regular in New Zealand domestic circuit. Mitchell moved to Western Australia in 2006 when his father became head coach.


Daryl Mitchell, a New Zealand cricketer, made his T20I debut against India in 2019. He made his Test debut against England in November 2019. In January 2021, Mitchell scored his first century in Test cricket, with an unbeaten 102 runs. In March 2021, he made his ODI debut against Bangladesh. In August 2021, Mitchell was named in New Zealand’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, opening the batting alongside Martin Guptill. He was promoted to open the innings during the tournament, but plans changed due to Tim Seifert’s late arrival. Mitchell scored 72 not out in the semi-final against England, winning the match by five wickets. He ended the campaign with impressive returns, scoring 208 runs in seven innings, averaging 34.66 with the bat and a strike rate of 140.54.Mitchell made a successful test tour to England in July 2022, scoring a record 538 runs with an average of 107.60. He became the most prolific New Zealand player to score the most runs in a single test series on English soil against England, becoming the first New Zealand batsman to score centuries in three consecutive test matches in England. Mitchell also became the first batter in the world to score hundreds in each match of an away series of three or more tests. He was included in New Zealand’s squad for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and played a remarkable role in the 2023 Cricket World Cup, almost winning the match against India. He is currently playing for Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing IPL.


Mitchell got his school  education from his hometown Hamilton. His school’s name was South Well School while he also studied in St Paul’s Collegiate School, Hamilton. From 2005 to 2008 he studied in Hale School, Perth, and he also played cricket in this school. He studied Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports science from Edith Cowan University from 2009 to 2012, while in 2015 he got admission in Auckland University of Technology and got a post graduate diploma in sports and exercise. 

Family and Affairs

Daryl’s wife is Amy Braithwaite, and their marriage occurred on 7 July 2017. Now they are parents of two beautiful daughters named Addison Mitchell and Lily Maree Mitchell. He is one year younger than his wife, but they have a strong relationship of love.


Daryl’s height is 6 ft and 1 inch which gives him an advantage in sports. He has dark brown eyes, while he is almost bald. He carefully maintains his weight and currently he has a weight of 85 kg.  


He was named as the winner of the ICC Spirit of the Cricket Award 2021 during the 2021 ICC Awards in recognition of his act for his decision on not to run for a single after realising that he had obstructed English bowler Adil Rashid on his way during the critical juncture of the closely fought tense semi-final clash between England and New Zealand at Abu Dhabi. He was nominated for the ICC Player of the Month along with Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root for the month of June 2022.
