Early life
Ebrahim Raisi was born on 14 December 1960 to a clerical family in the Noghan district of Mashhad. His father, Seyed Haji, died when he was 5. Raisi is among Husayn ibn Ali (Hussaini) Sayyids, and he is connected to Ali ibn Husayn Zayn al-Abidin Sayyids.
Career
After the Iranian Revolution, Raisi dedicated his career to upholding the nascent regime against internal opposition. He underwent administration training and joined the prosecutor’s office in Masjed Soleymān. He gained experience as a prosecutor for various jurisdictions, including Karaj city, Hamadan city, and Hamadan province. In 1988, Khomeini ordered the execution of thousands of political prisoners and appointed Raisi to a committee tasked with determining whether prisoners were disloyal to the government. After Ali Khamenei became rahbar (leader of Iran) in 1989, Raisi began to attain senior ranks within Iran’s judicial system. He served as prosecutor of Tehran (1989–94), head of the General Inspection Organization (1994–2004), and prosecutor general of the Special Court for the Clergy (2012–21). In 2016, Khamenei appointed Raisi custodian of the shrine of ʿAli al-Rida in Mashhad, placing him in charge of Iran’s largest bonyad (charitable trust).

He has claimed to have received a doctorate degree in private law from Motahari University; however, this has been disputed.
Family and Affairs
Raisi is married to Jamileh Alamolhoda, daughter of Mashhad Friday Prayers Imam, Ahmad Alamolhoda. She is an associate professor at Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti University and also president of the university’s Institute of Fundamental Studies of Science and Technology. They have two daughters and two grandchildren. One of their daughters studied at Sharif University and the other one at Tehran University.
